Attendance 4.5 available
Friday, July 1, 2011 at 11:58AM Attendance 4.5 has been approved by Apple. The main new feature is that on devices that support background tasks, the Backup to Dropbox option will continue in the background so you do not need to leave the app open while the upload completes. Apps may run for a limited time in the background before iOS terminates them so if you have a slow connection or have a large number of photos, they may not complete, but in most cases the attend.db file should upload successfully in the background. The next time you open Attendance you will see a success or failure dialog.
This version still runs on iOS 3.1, but this is likely the last version that will. There is a dialog for those running Attendance on iOS 3.1 asking them to email me for details on how to save the current version on their computer in case they accidentally update to a new version (so they can restore it). My guess is there are very few people still running Attendance on iOS 3.1, but I will see how many people email me. Unless there are a large number of people still using it on iOS 3.1, the next version will require iOS 4.0 or higher.

Dave, The Chronicle article mentioned that many faculty like the flashcard mode to help them learn names. I do not see that in the app. What am I missing?
Dave,
I was wondering with the Attendance app, is it possible to do attendance for a single class on multiple devices and consolidate all of that information into a single attendance record? I am a high school band director and we have multiple directors who take attendance for a single class with a 100+ students. It is easier for multiple people to take attendance to be more efficient. Is this an option wit your app?
Thanks,
Rob
Sorry, I just got the notifications for these posts. Please use email (my address is in the Instructions tab of the app) if you have questions as I check that every day.
Darrell: The flashcard mode they are referring to is the random tab.
Rob, no you can't combine data from multiple devices. I would need to rewrite the app to have the internal data structures necessary to do the syncing.

Hey Dave,
I work with after school programs am looking for an electronic way to do our roll sheets. I need a way to not only check in kids, but show when kids have been checked out. So when the day is over, I need a record of who was there, and that they were also checked out. Would I be able to do that through your app? I couldn't find your email anywhere on the site, but feel free to answer me through email (I provided it when leaving this comment). Thanks!
Nick,
The app supports custom statuses (the default are absent, present, late, excused) so what other places do is make their own statuses such as: absent, in, out, excused. At the beginning of the day you set the status to in and then when they leave you change the status to out. Email me at dave256apps (at) me (dot) com if you have other questions as it didn't record your email.
